American Character produced their version of the Toni doll between 1958 and ____. Toni dolls were licensed advertisement dolls for the Toni Home Permanents, popular at that time. Ideal, was the first company to produce a Toni doll. Their dolls were made of hard plastic and had more of a childlike appearance. More recently, Robert Tonner Doll produced a 13-inch Toni doll, similar to that of the smaller American Character dolls, but with a more modern appearance.
At first glance, there appears to be no difference between the larger sized Sweet Sue Sophisticate dolls produced for only one year in 1957, and the Toni dolls produced from 1958 on. However, that is not entirely correct and there are actually a few subtle differences, if one looks closely. For instance, the Sweet Sue Sophisticate doll has eye lashes underneath her eyes while the Toni doll has lashes only at the corner of her eyes. Sweet Sue Sophisticate can swivel and bend at her waist and is able to turn and tilt her head. Toni can only swivel at the wait and while she can turn her head, she cannot tilt it.
